FACILITIES UPDATE
Closure of the main gate to Joe Brown Park saw a huge decrease in undesirable activities, excessive littering, alcohol consumption and drug use through most of the summer. Park users were still able to park outside the gate and walk in to enjoy the park. Panorama Ridge Riding Club has the ability to open the gate for access but will not leave it open for extended times.
Unfortunately a huge amount of damage was done by arson in the late spring by vandals who hiked in and set fire to jump standards, fence boards, bleacher boards and just about anything they could find, including metal eaves ripped from the concession. They carried in their own folding chairs to watch and then attempted to burn them. Beer bottles melted with the intensity of the heat generated.
It will take considerable effort and dollars to replace boards, jump standards, and bleacher seats from which everyone may enjoy the amazing view of Delta. We hope to have this done early in the New Year.
Clean up included removing the unsightly box car and replacing it with the pad to establish a location for an on sight caretaker. This has worked well at Sunnyside and to date we hear from many people that Joe Brown Park feels safer. We expect that vandalism to Riding Club will be eliminated and some seniors are now back to walking in the park and have expressed their approval. We hope that the whole neighbourhood will enjoy the benefits of this arrangement.
